Baidu Research and Peel announced that Baidu’s Deep Speech technology is being integrated into Peel’s smart home platform to create next-generation voice-enabled products.

Peel offers a popular universal remote app for smartphones and tablets. It has more than 150 million users in 200 countries and 10 billion monthly remote commands.

Deep Speech is a state-of-the-art speech recognition system developed using “end-to-end deep learning” by Baidu Research’s Silicon Valley AI Lab (SVAIL). It was recently highlighted by MIT Tech Review as a breakthrough technology

A beta version of Peel’s Deep Speech-powered remote was demonstrated today at the GPU Technology Conference.  The demo shows how speech recognition can be used to access live TV, DVR and streaming content seamlessly across devices.

For example, using voice commands, a user can switch between House of Cards on Roku and Game of Thrones on cable TV, or ask to see a line-up of comedy shows or programs about the U.S. presidential election.

The Peel voice-based remote will initially be available on Android, followed by iOS. The beta version is English-only, but a Mandarin version is planned as well.
